The Thrill of the First “Big Win”

Tucker got a four point major on Friday.  I knew it would happen sooner or later.  After all, I can see that Tucker is a very nice welshie and he did get a 5-point major reserve his first weekend of shows at just over one year of age, but that knowledge obviously did not prepare me for actually winning.

Tucker was being shown by his handler, Katie Shepard, so we hid outside so Tucker would not be distracted by seeing us.  A friend showing her dog in Tucker’s class came outside after showing, so we asked her for an update.  She told us that Tucker won his Open Dog class of three.  I knew that meant he had a very good chance of winning Winners Dog, but even that didn’t prepare me for when his breeder, Keith Vooris came out and said “Congratulations!” I actually started crying.  I walked in and saw Keith’s wife, Carla and she asked “What’s wrong?” when she saw me crying.  I didn’t know what else to say except, “I’m happy.”

My goal when Tucker gets his second major will simply be to try not to cry (at least until after we get home).
