Why I Participate in NASDA Events with My Welsh Springer Spaniels

If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a Welsh Springer Spaniel owner, it’s that these dogs are happiest when they have a job to do. Welshies are intelligent, energetic, and deeply connected to their owners. While they may be known for their beauty in the conformation ring, what truly sets them apart is their drive and versatility. That’s exactly why I found myself drawn to North American Sport Dog Association (NASDA) events.

NASDA events have become a cornerstone of the bond I share with my dogs, and I want to share why they’ve become such an important part of our lives.

Rediscovering a Dog’s Natural Instincts

NASDA events are designed to honor and preserve the working heritage of all dogs, from scent detection to hunting and tracking skills. For Welsh Springers—who were originally bred as hunting dogs—these events are like unlocking a part of their DNA. It’s incredible to see their noses in action and their minds fully engaged.

When my Welshies and I participate in a NASDA event, I see them light up in a way that’s hard to describe. They’re problem-solvers at heart, and when they’re out on a scent search or trailing challenge, it’s as though they’re saying, “This is what I was born to do!”

The Four Types of NASDA Titles

One of the things I love about NASDA is the variety it offers. There are four main types of titles you and your dog can pursue:

  1. Lost Item Recovery

This event mimics the real-world skill of finding lost items. Whether it’s a wallet, keys, or even a glove, your dog uses its nose to locate the item based on your scent. It’s a practical and fun challenge that showcases your dog’s scent discrimination skills.

  1. Trailing and Locating

This title tests your dog’s ability to follow a scent trail to locate a person or animal. It’s an incredible way to see your dog’s natural tracking instincts in action. For Welsh Springers, this is especially rewarding because it taps into their heritage as hunting dogs.

  1. Shed Dog

If you’ve ever heard of shed hunting, this title is for dogs trained to find shed antlers in various environments. It’s a unique activity that combines scent work with a touch of hunting, making it a fun challenge for dogs of all backgrounds.

  1. Urban Locating

This event challenges dogs to use their noses in urban or man-made environments, like parking lots or buildings. It’s an excellent way to test their adaptability and focus in more controlled settings.

Each type of event has its own levels, so you and your dog can start small and build up to more advanced challenges as you gain experience.

Mental and Physical Exercise

As a dog owner, I know how critical it is to provide both mental and physical stimulation. Welshies are an active breed, and if they don’t get enough exercise, they can quickly become bored—and a bored dog is often a destructive one! NASDA events are the perfect outlet for this.

In every event, whether it’s urban locating or lost item recovery, my dogs are working their brains and their bodies. The physical exercise helps keep them in peak condition for other activities like Fast CAT or rally, while the mental challenges keep them sharp and focused.

Strengthening Our Bond

There’s something magical about working alongside your dog toward a shared goal. NASDA events aren’t just about showcasing your dog’s skills; they’re about teamwork. When I’m on the course with my Welshies, it’s not just about giving commands—it’s about learning to trust each other.

Every time we succeed, it feels like a celebration of our partnership. And even when we don’t get it quite right, it’s still a valuable learning experience for both of us.

Building Confidence

Welshies can be sensitive dogs, and one of the best things about NASDA events is how they help build confidence. When my dogs complete a search successfully or pick up a tricky scent trail, you can see the pride in their posture.

This confidence carries over into other areas of their lives, whether it’s walking into a busy show ring or staying focused during a barn hunt event. NASDA has helped my dogs believe in themselves—and that’s something every dog owner wants to see.

Community and Fun

One of the unexpected perks of NASDA events has been the community. Dog people are some of the friendliest and most supportive folks you’ll meet, and NASDA enthusiasts are no exception. It’s a joy to spend weekends with people who share the same passion for their dogs.

These events are also just plain fun. Watching my Welshies do what they love and seeing their tails wagging with enthusiasm is a reward in itself.

Why Welsh Springer Spaniels Shine in NASDA

Welsh Springers might not be the first breed you think of when it comes to scent work, but they excel in NASDA events. Their strong work ethic, keen noses, and eager-to-please personalities make them naturals. Plus, their agility and athleticism give them an edge in navigating challenging courses.

NASDA gives my Welshies the opportunity to showcase their unique talents while staying true to their roots as versatile, hard-working companions.

Why You Should Try It

If you’ve never tried a NASDA event with your dog, I can’t recommend it enough. It doesn’t matter if you have a hunting breed, a herding breed, or even a mutt—these events are designed for all dogs to tap into their instincts and have a blast.

For me and my Welshies, NASDA events aren’t just another activity on our calendar. They’re a way to honor who my dogs are, strengthen our connection, and give them a fulfilling and enriched life. There’s nothing quite like watching your dog shine in their element, and I promise it’s an experience you’ll cherish as much as I do. Visit Bear Creek K9 Sports to find the next event in Central VA.
